2018 will mark 100 years since the birth of the founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan. The year will not only be about remembering all that Sheikh Zayed did to form the UAE of today, but it will also, like with the Year of Giving, be about instilling his values across the community.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, announced the launch of the ‘Day for Dubai’ initiative. The initiative aims to both solidify social responsibility among its citizens, and reinforce the spirit of volunteerism. It encourages every resident to share the gift of their time by dedicating at least one day of the year to leverage their talent and skill set to volunteer, giving back to those in need, improving and maintaining their city and community, and protecting the environment.

This is a first-time initiation put forward by Pakistan Association Dubai aligned with Year of Zayed 2018 for the youth of Pakistan. This initiative promotes the concept of paying a tribute to the U.A.E’s Founding Father by completing 100 hours in volunteer work in 2018 that also marks 100 years since his birth. The best way to celebrate the Year of Zayed would be by spreading Zayed's glorious human legacy, his inspirational and noble values and to introduce these ideals to new generations.

Own an Hour Program is fully aligned with a Day for Dubai Initiative and aims to involve youth in it. Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) establishes procedures to plan, develop, implement, and maintain the Own an Hour Program (OHP) intern/volunteer training and curriculum.

The OHP requires the intern to complete 100 hours of training and is divided into two parts: module (25 hours) and practical (75 hours). The module-based training will require volunteers to attend two sessions every month till the completion of the program. The practical part involves volunteers participating in tasks and duties for the organization in concurrence with the module portion of the program.

The Volunteer Program consists of total five modules. Each module is further divided into various learning sessions and practical training exercises.

The facility will cater to the medical facilities of the low income groups across all nationalities.

The demolition process of the thirty three year old building at Pakistan Association Dubai has started. It will be replaced by Pakistan Centre; a Dh 12 million project which the Association kicked off last year with the theme of ‘own a brick’.
The theme breaks down the project cost into 12,000 bricks with each brick costing Dh 1,000 whilst urging community members to participate.
The building being demolished now was built in 1984 on the land gifted to the Pakistani community by the late H.H Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1973.
“Back then also community members from all walks of life, especially the blue collar workers helped the structure find its ground and today also we are banking on our members to help us fulfill the dream of Pakistan Centre” said Dr Faisel Ikram, President of PAD.
Pakistan Centre will be housed in a two storey structure encompassing a Pakistan Medical Centre, a health and fitness centre, a restaurant, mosque, seminar rooms, offices, children’s play area and BBQ area.
The highlight of this project remains the Pakistan Medical Centre which will serve as a not for profit healthcare facility for all nationalities and is a first of its kind polyclinic by any community in the GCC.
“As we enter into the Year of Zayed from Year of Giving, our belief in giving back to the community has strengthened. We wish to leave a legacy behind like the Founding Father of UAE which will be a source of pride for our younger generations” said Dr Ikram who is spearheading the world’s largest community centre for overseas Pakistanis.
According to him there are over 1.5 million Pakistanis residing in the U.A.E and rallying for 12, 000 bricks isn’t a big ask. They should feel the responsibility of endorsing the project, taking ownership and contributing towards it in any way; be it spreading awareness about it.
The project was launched last year on Pakistan’s Independence Day under the vision of ‘One Nation One Dream’ and this year on August 14 the foundation stone was laid by His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan.
“Pakistan Centre is a project of 18 months which we plan to deliver before time and InshaAllah inaugurate it on August 14, 2019 fulfilling our promise to the community.”
It has received widespread applause from everyone around with the Government of Dubai endorsing it as a project for the Year of Giving, legendaries like Anwar Maqsood and Shahid Afridi joining the journey with commitments worth Dh 9 million already been made.
Dr Ikram said that the persistence support from the Community Development Authority has played an integral role in helping them achieve what seemed impossible to them.
